Two icons of craftsmanship, one perfect partnership.
At Rundle Tailoring, we’ve always believed in craftsmanship that stands the test of time, which is why we’re proud to announce that we now stock Akubra in our Newcastle store. This partnership brings together two regional Australian brands with deep heritage, a commitment to quality, and a genuine love of timeless style.
For over a century, Akubra has been handcrafting Australia’s most iconic hats. Their Master Hatters oversee 162 individual steps, each hat handled more than 200 times, and crafted over six remarkable weeks. These artisans carry skills handed down through generations, preserving traditional hat-making techniques that ensure every Akubra is durable, beautiful and unmistakably Australian. That reverence for detail resonates deeply with us because precision and quality have been the backbone of Rundle Tailoring for four generations.
Our curated edit of Akubra’s best-selling styles was selected for their versatility, craftsmanship and enduring appeal. Customers often pick them up for everyday wear, but we’re also seeing more wedding parties incorporating Akubra into their outfits. In black, chocolate or sand, it’s a new kind of finishing touch that photographs beautifully and feels perfectly attune to the incredible Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and Mid-North Coast wedding venues on our doorstep.
Whether you’re searching for a hat with heritage, a thoughtful gift, or the perfect topper for your wedding or race-day look, our team can help you find the ideal Akubra fit. And as with every product in store, you’ll receive the expert, personalised service we’re known for.
Two regional names. One shared commitment to quality. And a collection we’re truly proud to offer.

Akubra FAQs
How do I choose the right Akubra hat size?
To find your Akubra size, measure around your head just above the ears and across the mid-forehead. Compare the measurement with Akubra’s sizing chart (if you’re between sizes, we recommend going up). Felt hats can be gently adjusted for a personalised fit, but as always, our team of experts can help you find the perfect fit when you visit in-store.
Are Akubra hats waterproof?
Akubra hats are water-resistant thanks to their quality rabbit fur felt and factory-applied water repellent. They can handle showers and light rain but should be dried naturally if they become wet. Avoid heat sources, which can shrink the felt.
How do I care for my Akubra hat?
Use a soft brush to remove dust, always brushing in a counter-clockwise direction. Store your hat upside down on its crown or on a hat stand to protect the brim. Keep it away from direct heat and never leave it in a hot car, as the felt can warp.
Can I reshape my Akubra hat?
Yes. Akubra hats can be steamed and reshaped, but we recommend having this done by a professional to protect the brim and crown. A list of authorised hat refurbishers can be found on the Akubra website.
Are Akubra hats made in Australia?
Yes. Every Akubra hat is proudly made in Australia in their Kempsey factory (just 3 hours north of our Newcastle store) and using traditional handcrafting techniques. Akubra has been an Australian icon for over 140 years.
How long will an Akubra hat last?
With proper care, an Akubra can last decades. Their durable fur felt construction is designed for daily wear in Australian conditions, balancing resilience with timeless style.
What is the difference between Akubra styles?
Each Akubra style varies in crown height, brim width, shape, and band detailing. Some offer more sun protection, while others lean into a dressier silhouette. If you’re unsure which style suits you best, our team can guide you based on fit, lifestyle, face shape and wardrobe.
Can I wear an Akubra in summer?
Absolutely. Many Akubra styles are designed for sun protection and breathability. The felt naturally insulates, helping keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.
Do Akubra hats shrink?
Felt hats can shrink slightly over time, especially with heat exposure. If yours feels too snug, we can help stretch or adjust it for a comfortable fit.
